In time we hope this page will become an invaluable resource “or a Technical corner” for referees, coaches, players and those people needing further details on the subtleties, rules and officiating of the game of Touch.
In Wales we have a steady pool of referees within the club leagues who referee the matches with level headedness, patience, compassion, confidence. As in probably every sport the world over, we are looking for individuals who are interested in becoming touch referees.
We are all aware of the hard time that referees get in every sport, but it is well known to everyone that, without the efforts of these fine people week in week out - THERE WOULD BE NO GAME!
The WTA is constantly seeking to assist in the development of refereeing standards across Wales by running Referee Courses and by working with local League organisers.
Referee Courses are run by the WTA and delivered to referees and players who want a better understanding of the rules. All courses fall under the European Touch grading system. There are badges for levels 1 (entry level) to 5 (world cup standard).
For details on forthcoming refereeing courses, refer to the forthcoming events tab
This is an Introductory course for Touch Referees. No previous experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. This 3 hour course includes a discussion about the basics of the game and of refereeing, and then an 'open book' style exam. Those who pass the course (which includes on-field assessment either that day or at a later stage) will receive a European Level 1 certificate and badge.
Ideally interested people will have attended and passed the Level 1 course before attending a Level 2 course. Also referees will need to have done a season of refereeing prior to the course. This is a full one day course and will consist of a presentation, interactive sessions, theory & practical assessment (either that day or at a later stage). Those who pass the course will receive a European Level 2 certificate and badge.
Note that currently Level 3 is the highest level that can be awarded within the Touch Europe Referee programme. Ideally interested people will have attended and passed the Level 2 course before attending a Level 3 course, and have done a minimum of 2 years practical refereeing experience. This is a full two day course and includes interactive sessions, theory & practical assessments and a written exam. Those who pass the course will receive a European Level 3 certificate and badge.
The development of refereeing standards is the responsibility the WTAs refereeing co-ordinator. The WTA holds a database of over 50 referees nationwide and is willing to assist organisers by providing referee support for local tournaments.
